Autopilot, Tesla Motors' semi-autonomous driving system caused a fatal accident in Florida in May, 2016. Potentially, this could be a major blow to the reputation of the company as well as to the future of autonomous driving. Google and major auto-manufacturers all over the world, which have recently been spending vast sums of money on the development of this revolutionary technology, are now being forced to reconsider their development plans. Some companies are now considering shifting their focus from semi-autonomous driving, such as Tesla's, to full autonomous driving such as the one Google has been developing for many years.
This report examines the Tesla's accident, and, based on this analysis, considers the path to autonomous driving and the future of the relationship between humans and automobiles.
