The term "BYOD" is in the news a lot these days. BYOD is short for Bring Your Own Device, and refers to employees who bring their own smartphone or tablet to the workplace. A common example of use of personal iPads for memo-taking or presentations.
While the penetration of smartphones is one factor behind BYOD, another is that employees were already using their mobile phones or earlier smartphones for so-called PIM functions, such as email, calendar and contact management. Meaning, the BYOD we see today isn't the first time employees have used smartphones at work; rather, it means that they are using their personally owned smartphones (generally, an Android or iOS phone) instead of the BlackBerry or other device they had been using for work in parallel to their personally owned line. The rapid decline of RIM in the North American market since 2009 is evidence of this.
There are several requirements to make BYOD work at the workplace. While obvious, there needs to be WLAN available (to BYOD phones) in the office. Employees need to be in the habit of connecting to the workplace when not in the office, and companies need to enable this. Simply put, when employees bring in their own smartphone into the workplace, that also means they bring it out again, either home or elsewhere. This is a good opportunity to increase productivity.
BYOD represents a security issue for business IT infrastructure, given the heterogeneity of applications and smartphone models that will be touching company resources. However, it is an opportunity for increased productivity and increased motivation, since employees will be able to use the device of their preference.
In this report we explore what's behind the BYOD trend and various use cases. In particular, we explore players who benefit from BYOD, and those who are hurt by it.
