ライドシェアがタクシーを駆逐する日

UberやLyftなどのライドシェアリングが勢いを増している。利用者は順調に増え、多額の資金調達にも成功している。必ずしもいいニュースばかりでもないが、良くも悪くも交通サービス市場をかき回している。一方タクシー業界は苦悩している。ライドシェアリングに利用者ばかりかドライバーまで奪われ、存在感がどんどん薄くなっている。
タクシー業界はこれまで規制に縛られてきたが、それは規制に守られてきたということでもある。ライドシェアリングがタクシーと同じようなことを自由にできるようになるといろいろなところに影響が出る。タクシー会社が打撃を受けるだけでなく、エコシステムが崩れ、市場は大混乱に陥る可能性がある。規制当局が簡単にそれを認めるはずがないとの一定の安心感がこれまではあった。
カリフォルニア州でその風穴が開けられた。タクシーよりも軽い規制で、もっと便利で柔軟性やメリットの大きい交通サービスが合法的に提供できることになった。ライドシェアリングによる破壊的イノベーションが一気に加速する可能性がある。タクシー業界だけではなく、レンタカーやパーキングやその他の既存業界もうかうかしてはいられない。ライドシェアリングと徹底的に戦うか、または仲間に入れてもらうかの決断が迫られている。

“Ridesharing” companies such as Uber and Lyft are gaining in popularity. They have captured a large number of users, and have also secured a substantial amount of funding. Without doubt they are disrupting the transportation service market, both in a good and bad way. On the contrary, the taxi industry is suffering. They have lost users as well as drivers, and they are even losing their presence in the market.

The taxi industry has been regulated; that is to say, they have been protected by the regulations. There would be a major disruption if ridesharing companies were allowed to freely usurp the taxi’s position. It could damage the taxi industry, as well as their ecosystem, and it would put the market into disorder. People may have been complacent in thinking that the regulatory body would not allow such consequences.

The State of California has made a landmark decision. Ridesharing companies have been allowed to lawfully provide similar or even better and more flexible services than taxis, under lighter regulations. This change can possibly accelerate the disruptive innovation of ridesharing. Those who could be affected by this innovation may not only be taxis but rent-a-car, parking and other related industries. There are two options: to fight the losing battle against the shift to ridesharing, or to join them.
