カリブの携帯電話事業者Digicel Groupの急成長

Digicel Group Ltd.（Digicel）は、カリブの最大手携帯電話事業者で、アイルランド人起業家Denis O'Brien氏の所有する非上場企業である。創業は2001年、ジャマイカでGSM方式による携帯電話サービスを開始した。かつて英Cable & Wireless plc.（C&W）が通信事業を独占していたカリブ海島嶼国に次々と参入したため、"Monopoly Breaker"と称される。汎カリブ海携帯電話事業者へと成長した後は、中南米、南太平洋島嶼国へも進出。2008年末までに事業地域を32市場へと拡大し、2010年8月、グループ全体の加入者数1100万台を達成した。
Digicelの主力商品はプリペイド携帯電話サービスである。格安料金を売りとし、市場参入時に大々的な宣伝を行って加入者の獲得に努めてきた。今後、携帯電話市場が飽和することを見据え、無線ブロードバンド事業にも力を入れ始めている。島嶼国を中心に展開しているDigicelは、WiMAX方式による無線ブロードバンドを選択した。

Digicel Group Ltd. (Digicel), owned by Irish entrepreneur Denis O'Brien, is the Caribbean's largest mobile phone operator. The company’s first GSM mobile service was launched in Jamaica in 2001. Since then, Digicel has rapidly expanded its business, entering markets where the UK Cable and Wireless PLC.(C&W) had previously held a monopoly for telecom services, and has branded itself as a 'Monopoly Breaker'.
By the end of 2008, Digicel offered mobile services in 32 markets: 20 in the Caribbean, 3 in Central America, 3 in South America, and 6 in the South Pacific. As of August 2010 total subscriber numbers in all markets have passed the 11-million mark. With its aggressive pricing and marketing blitz, Digicel has succeeded in establishing its brand name in the mobile market.
Increasingly, Digicel is looking toward 'wireless broadband' as a promising area to help maintain its growth and complement its existing mobile networks. Due to the geographical nature of its market consisting primarily of islands that make it difficult to deploy fixed-line infrastructure, the company has selected WiMAX technology to provide these services,
