携帯電話事業者のCEO達が語ったこと ～ Mobile World Congress 2012の基調講演から～

モバイル関連の展示会としては最大規模とされるMobile World Congress （MWC） 2012が、2012年2月27日から3月1日まで、スペイン・バルセロナにおいて開催された。全世界から6万7000人が参加したとされる。
筆者は、各社のトップが登壇したキーノートスピーチ（基調講演）・セッション（合計7回）等を聴講した。本稿では、主として携帯電話事業者のCEOが、現在直面している課題や今後の事業戦略をどのように語ったかについてまとめたものである。
スマートフォン等のモバイルデバイスの爆発的な普及により、すべてがつながる世界が実現し、また伝統的な事業者以外のプレイヤーの参入により、業界に大きな地殻変動が起こっている。
その中、各社のCEOは、業界内のパートナー達との協力関係に基づき、持続可能な新たなエコシステムを構築するのが課題であるとした。
同時に、トラヒック急増に対処するために多額の設備投資が必要にもかかわらず、料金引き下げや周波数オークション等でその足を引っ張るかのような政策を進めているとして、規制当局への批判も相次いだ。

Mobile World Congress 2012, the mobile industry's largest convention, was held between 27th of February and the 1st of March in Barcelona, Spain, and saw over 67,000 people coming from around the world to attend the event. This article summarizes the keynote speeches made by the CEOs of the industry's top mobile Operators at the convention, where they outlined the challenges they are facing, and identified strategies they will be employing to ensure their success.
The mobile industry is currently experiencing an historic change initiated by the explosive growth in numbers of mobile devices, including smart phones, and the entry of range of new players such as OTT providers. The key point emphasized by the CEOs speeches focused on the imperative of developing a new sustainable ecosystem in collaboration with all stakeholders in the industry. However, they also criticized the industry regulators for their hard-line stance taken against the mobile Operators. Of the numerous problems underlying this relationship, speakers made particular reference to termination and roaming rates regulations, as well as spectrum auctions which discourage operators' investing in the construction of networks to meet the burgeoning traffic increase on mobile infrastructure.
